"She'd gotten a lot of anonymous phone threats and letters. About the articles."
"Who'd you suspect?"
He shrugged. "At the time, everybody," he said. "But mostly the developers. They bought the land from the town for peanuts, so they had the most to lose if somebody found contaminants in the ground."
"Did they?"
"No."
"The titles suggest she'd been angling on those who sold the land."
"Yes, but she got nowhere."
"No evidence?"
"No evidence, and the fact that the people who used the land disappeared. Overnight the place was stripped clean, and no names."
"What was it?"
"A small research lab in Adamsville, the middle of nowhere. She didn't let on much, but she once said she thought they did some kind of government work. What it was, she never learned, or never told."
"But she suspected they were using Magog as a dumpsite?"
He nodded.
"Do you know exactly which parcel of land?"
He shook his head. "The town bought something like forty acres. I'm sure it's recorded someplace."
"Any idea what they might have dumped?"
"No," he said, "or even if they did dump."
"You don't believe there was a dump."
"What I believe is irrelevant. There's just no evidence."
"Then what were her leads?"
Waite smiled faintly. "Funny thing about Sally. We were engaged to be married, but she never talked about her stories. My guess is, she had her own Deep Throat who whispered in her ear."
"Did anybody ever excavate?"
"Not on private property," he said. "Even if she had evidence, you'd need the Army Corps of Engineers to dig it up. Forty acres is
